Coweta
Winterguard 2008-2009 Guidelines
Coweta Colorguard:
Coweta Winterguard is a commitment not only for yourself, but YOU are committing
to the others next to you! We start December 2nd and end March 28
competively and may go longer for extra shows for high school and junior high.
Therefore, consider the commitment I require for Coweta Colorguard. Auditions
will take place on November 25 from 4-8pm. At this time we will determine who
will be in which Colorguard. Both shows will be amazing and whichever Guard you
are placed in, you should fully commit to it. Failure to not participate in
Winterguard, could affect next year's placement in Coweta Colorguard. If there
are any problems, they need to be addressed to Shannon and Mr. Parker before
auditions begin.
ATTENDANCE AND TARDINESS: Practices will begin Tuesday, December 2nd.
Practices will start at 4:00pm to 6:00pm for the Papaya Guard and 6:00pm to
8:00pm for Kiwi Guard, and on Mondays from 4:30pm-8pm. You must be in block,
ready to start at beginning time. Anyone 0:01 to 5 minutes late will result in
the entire guard doing one lap. Anyone more than 5 minutes late will result in
the entire guard doing one lap and 100 spins per each member per each minute
late for everyone. This will start at first practice and continue through the
entire year, including Winterguard season. There will be one 15 minute break
per each time block. ALL PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY! We do not have the luxury,
as in Marching Band to make up the next day. Winterguard you have one or two
rehearsals a week. Missing one, could put you seriously behind.
Attendance at Guard Camp, Practices and Performances are mandatory!!!! Again,
we do not have the luxury of being able to learn new work from home. Practices
are the ONLY time you have to learn work and the show. Therefore, practices are
highly important!
WARNING!! NEW POLICY!! WARNING!! NEW POLICY!! If you are absent from
a rehearsal, and we are working heavily on a part of the show, there is no way
to secure your role in that part. You must be at practice to learn the work,
and if absent, you can't learn the work, thereby not being in that part of the
show. Please inform your parents of when practice is and how long it will
last. Practices/Performances should not be missed for Doctor's appointments,
Dentist Appointments, Birthday Parties, Work, Club Meetings, etc. You know when
we will be practicing as of right now. Do not make commitments on the days
already scheduled.
***That being said, as important as it is to be at rehearsal, exceptions are
made for illness and emergencies. Please take care of yourself and the rest of
the Guard by not spreading germs throughout! Please also understand that we
know things come up that are not expected, please communicate with me or Kendall
if this should occur. We will apply to the same policy as the band, which is:
Severe illness and family emergencies are the only exceptions to missing any
required and mandatory function. A headache or cold does not count as a severe
illness, vacation or student work schedules does not count as an emergency. It
is the policy of Coweta High School Band to be as flexible as possible when a
conflict exists with another school activity. Students are still expected to
make every possible effort to fulfill their performance obligation. If you are
to be absent from a rehearsal due to illness, we require notification from a
parent/guardian before the start of rehearsal.***
Practice Etiquette: Once at practice no one is allowed to leave practice
to go get food, drinks, etc. This is to ensure you are safe at practice. Once
practice has started, there is no excess talking, no cell phones ringing and no
other distractions. You are now a STATE CHAMPION Guard, and it is time to step
up your game. All cell phones will be put on silent. During breaks, you may
use your phone or any other activity you need to do. Again, no one is to leave
once practice has started. Make sure you come prepared to practice with plenty
of water and a snack for later. Be prepared for all kids of weather
Attire: Black
T-shirt or school approved tank top and black shorts or dance pants. NO JEANS,
FLIP-FLOPS, OR ANY OTHER ARTICLE THAT COULD INHIBIT YOUR MOVEMENT.
Fundraising: I am in the process in working with the Band Parents to
help alleviate the cost of your Winterguard Dues. Please take advantage of all
opportunities that you are given! All group fundraisers, car washes, etc, are
required. Any additional fundraisers offered are for you benefit, but not
mandatory. Please note whether you choose to participate in the additional
fundraisers or not, costs are still due. Your first payment of half the money
is due by January 31st and the rest is due by March 1st.
Please make sure all money is turned in on time! Kiwi Guard will be $150 per
person plus T-shirt and rifle or saber and Papaya Guard will be $125 plus
T-shirt and rifle or saber.
Uniforms: It is the responsibility of the performer to ensure all parts
of uniform arrive to performances. They will be worn as the director sees fit.
They are to be handled properly. Each student is expected to uphold the highest
integrity while wearing uniform.
Equipment: All members are required to have all equipment with them at
all mandatory events. All members are also required to make sure the equipment
is in perfect shape. Members are responsible to ensure tips are in good shape
and to have their own roll of both black and white electrical tape. It is not
the responsibility of Shannon, Mr. Vargas or your captains to supply these for
you. Non-working equipment is the same as not having your Math book for class.
The directors are not responsible for your equipment to be working properly.
Travel: Coweta Colorguard travels often. Behavior at any performance,
away or home, or while traveling should be above reproach. School rules apply
on all trips just as if you were on campus. When at contest, member can choose
to go home after contest is over, with a parent or guardian ONLY!! The parent
or guardian must go to either Shannon or Band Director and let them know they
will take home their son or daughter. Members can not go home with anyone who
is not their personal parents or guardian! NO EXCEPTIONS!! This rule will be
strictly observed. No one may leave contest before it is over. Contest days
are entire day. They typically start at 8am and will go until 6-7pm approx.
Eligibility: We will completely go word for word on this policy like the
band will follow. "It is the student's responsibility to remain eligible to
participate in band. If a student is on the ineligibility list for an extended
period of time, they will lose participation privileges. Students may
participate again after remaining off the list long enough to regain the
confidence of the directors. If a student is ineligible to participate in a
performance or contest, that student will lose her/his spot and participation
privileges. That member will be dropped to the bottom of the alternate list and
will only regain her/his spot when others in front of them also become unable to
participate. And still must be approved by directors. Students who are
continually ineligible will be asked to consider an elective other than band in
the following semester."
